Tag 1 der WM / Day 1 of the World Cup

Namibia - Serbia 3:0 (11:4, 11:6; 11:7)

Alle waren etwas nervoes vor dem ersten Spiel dieser Weltmeisterschaft. Nach den ersten zwei Baellen hat sich das aber schon gelegt. Der Gegner, Serbien, der fuer uns der grosse Unbekannte war selber sehr nervoes und liess uns gut ins Spiel kommen. Obwohl wir mit viel Respekt fuer den Gegner aufs feld gegangne waren fanden wir schnell zu unserem Spiel. Vorallem mit den Angaben von Michael Baas kamen die Serben kaum zurecht. der erste Satz ging verdient und klar an Namibia.

Wir konnten im zweiten Satz wieder die Leistung aus dem ersten Satz wiederholen und liessen nichts anbrennen. Klarer Sieg mit 11:6 auch dank der vielen Eigenfehler des Gegners.

Der dritte Satz begann mit zwei Eigenfehlern unsererseits. Schnell waren wir mit 1:3 im Hintertreffen. Das Team behielt aber die Ruhe und kaempfte sich zurueck. Nachdem 3:3 Ausgleich kamen wir wieder gut ins Spiel und liessen nichts mehr anbrennen. Die Serben zeigten in diesem Satz erstmals ihr volles Potential konnten das aber nicht ueber den ganzen Satz abrufen.

Erster Sieg und ein wichtiger fuer NAMIBIA. Coach Schluep war zufrieden.

Namibia - Brazil 0:3 (5:11; 5:11;7:11)

Team: Christoph Kubirske, Arend von Stryk, Michael Zimny, Olaf Haase, Mark Roesener

It started raining as the we were singing the national anthems and the weather which had been sunny and hot all day turned cold with a strong wind blowing. Brazil were the clear favourites for the match, being one of the contenders for the World Championship.

Although the score might suggest otherwise, we had a good first set. A solid defence around setter Michael Zimny allowed our Spiker, Christoph, to hit some beautiful points. He troubled the Brazilian Spikers with diagional attacks.

The second set was similar with Wanjo Meyer replacing Mark Roesener. Wanjo had a good start to the game with a solid pick up right off the first ball.  Brazil made no changes and continued playing with their top 5. There were some good attacks by our team but this was not enough against a solid Brazilian team.

Jens Iben replaced Olaf Haase in the third set. Jens made a comeback after sustaining a hamstring injury prior to our departure from Namibia. Brazil also made a couple of changes in attack. We lost a bit of concentration during the first couple of points of the set but after this initial phase started a comback leading 4:3. Unforced errors cost us the lead and Brazil capitalised.

In summary:

A good day for us. We achieved an important milestone with the win against Serbia. This means that we ended second in our group.

This means that we will play Argentinia in a DECICIVE match which will decide wether we continue the World Cup playing in the Top six or bottom six.
